Smart Pilots Who Do Dumb Things by Dr. Janet Lapp
Why do we know better, and do it anyway? Smart pilots do dumb things when beliefs wedge between knowledge and reality. Beliefs can help organize a chaotic world for us, but generally are bad things to have. They impede knowledge. The task of an excellent pilot, who wishes to be at the top of his or her game, is to examine each of the beliefs that are wedged between knowledge and reality. Below is a brief self-assessment of fallen-through-the crack erroneous beliefs underlying Human Factors incidents in aviation. All questions were developed based on controlled research reported in the International Journal of Aviation Psychology, Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI) Library, NAIR (National Institute of Aviation Research), NASA Ames Research Center, and various ongoing studies. Enter your answer in the space provided and wait until the Answer section before giving yourself points. Don’t cheat and look at the answers ahead of time. If you do, you already reveal yourself as an unsafe pilot (safe pilots don’t cut corners and do things the lazy way.)
PART ONE DELUSIONAL THOUGHT False beliefs that we can remember it, handle it, or overcome it.
PART TWO BAD BRAIN CHEMISTRY Chemical conditions that we do not know will make us unsafe. |

The Day of the Dead (18k) (docx) |
2007/10/30 |
(105) |
| The rituals from ancient Egypt of honouring departed souls (festival of Osiris) were brought to the new world through the Aztecs, who thought human sacrifice a blessing. In Mexico, the Day of the Dead mixes pre-Hispanic and Roman Catholic ritual. |
