There will be a dental trip to Poptun, Guatemala, which is near the Tikal ruins, from January 8th, 2009 to January 19th, 2009. This trip will be limited to 12 people and is open to medical people of all stripes. While in Guatemala we will visit the city of Antigua and the Tikal riuins.

Its February again, and time for our annual trip to Campeche.
The Campeche trip will be February 16-22. Limit is ten people. We will fly Sunday (probably a red-eye late Saturday) from LAX to Ciudad de Carmen, work Monday through Thursday, visit ruins on Friday, and fly back either Saturday or Sunday, probably Sunday. Cost last year was around $750 air fare + 150 expenses.

| Trip Information |
For nine months of the year,
LIGA sends planeloads of medical teams to Sinaloa Mexico on 2-3 day trips
to provide free medical services to local people.
Trips depart from
various locations in Southern California on Friday morning, and return
on Sunday afternoon. Travel time can be 3-5 hours depending upon the
location and the type of plane flown. Trips are flown in single and twin
engine light planes that seat from 4-6 people.
A typical team has 3-6
members on board and includes a pilot, medical professionals such as RNs,
MD's, dentists, audiologists, optometrists, interpreters and other
volunteers willing to help.
Current trip destinations are
the three LIGA Clinics of El Carrizo,
San Blas and
El Fuerte. El Fuerte and San Blas
clinics are open Friday night. Saturday is a full work day for the medical
teams at all three clinics. Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings are free
time. The return trip home begins with a morning departure, and after
stopping at the border for customs, fuel, and sometimes lunch, planes are
usually home around mid to late Sunday afternoon.
Check with your pilot, and leave some flexibility
in your schedule.
To be eligible to go on an
LIGA trip, you must first be a
member, which
requires filling out a
membership form
and paying an annual membership fee. Flight teams are assembled by our
Volunteer Coordinator, who selects teams based upon need.
To apply for a
trip, read our trip planning
overview, sign a
liability waiver,
and sign up for a
trip and complete your payment information. You may also incur
additional expenses of $50-100 during the trip for lodging and food (this
varies by location and may be as low as $10-15).
A PASSPORT or BIRTH
CERTIFICATE are the only accepted identification for immigration! |
| Trip Coordinating and Planning |
You can sign-up for a trip one
year in advance if you want. The most popular months tend to be October,
November, February, March, April and May, so sign up early for these
trips. You will more easily find a seat for the September, December,
January, and June trips. Medical students are welcome on our trips,
subject to space availability. There is usually a wait-list for students
wanting to come to our clinics.
The cut-off for signups is the 15 of the month prior to the trip. If
you must cancel a designated trip, you must notify the Liga office 7 days
prior to departure date (by the Thursday of the week before the trip) and
your money will be rolled over to another trip or refunded less $15.00. If
you give less notice, your money will be rolled over only if the seat is
filled. If the pilot has to go with an empty seat, your money will pay for
that seat as intended.Our Packing List

| A typical trip . . |
In
February 2003, 15 planes flew to El Fuerte with 53 passengers. We picked
up one volunteer physician from Ciudad Obregon. Six
flew commercially to Los Mochis.
San Blas clinic started work on Thursday, and the 22 Friday volunteers headed
off to San Blas upon arrival, seeing patients Friday night and all day
Saturday.
Thirty-three volunteers worked at the El Fuerte Clinic, with our
cardiology team working into the wee hours of the morning to see all
cardiology patients.
Early Saturday morning, three
planes took off for the beautiful 15 minutes flight to El Carrizo a small
town near the Pacific coast. Our 15 volunteers including three physicians
and one medical student at the El Carrizo Clinic treated 118 patients, and
provided seven referrals to other clinics.
Our dentist Thad and his
assistant Betty treated patients continually throughout the day. Two pilot
volunteers helped the pharmacist in the pharmacy, one psychologist saw
five patients, one pilot volunteer/RN did intake. |
